My research focuses on ancient colonisation, sanctuaries, and architecture, and the relationship between humans and their environment in terms of cultic activities, burials, and use of resources. I am also very interested in the intricate connections between ancient colonisation and modern colonialism. Digital applications in both research and teaching archaeology are another focus of mine.
I teach courses on a wide range of topics in Classical Archaeology, with a focus on architecture, culture contacts and sculpture. I do not only offer courses in Greek and Roman Archaeology, but include also courses on Phoenician and Punic Archaeology. In addition, I integrate the application of digital tools in my courses.
I studied Classical Archaeology, Assyriology and Prehistory at Heidelberg and Cambridge and received my PhD from Heidelberg University in 2010 with a doctoral thesis on Roman sanctuaries in Republican citizen colonies. Between 2006 and 2020 I held a PostDoc position at the Department of Classical Archaeology at TU Darmstadt. In 2020, I finished my postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation). From 2021 to 2024, I was substitute professor at the universities of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Leipzig, and Bonn, and I am currently Principal Investigator in the project “Diversity and conformity of cult places in Roman Republican colonies” at the University of Mainz. I also lead a project on teaching digital competencies in archaeology, together with Sebastian Hageneuer and Georg Pantelidis.
