Project Details

The complex mechanisms of landscape constructions are based on natural, socio-political, economic, ideological and cultural interdependencies: as such, they can only be analyzed in an interdisciplinary matrix. These survey projects therefore demand an interdisciplinary approach, combining the historical disciplines and building research.

Another essential aspect of this project on landscape history is the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment, the landscape genesis, the vegetation history and the natural habitat of the Plaghiá Peninsula. This will be possible due to the successful recovery of the geological and palynological archives, which was carried out within the framework of DFG and Gerda Henkel Foundation funded projects on palaeogeography (Prof. Dr. H. Brückner, University of Cologne; Prof. Dr. A. Vött, Geography and Geoarchaeology, University of Mainz) and palaeobotany (Dr. S. Jahns, Landesdenkmalamt Brandenburg). This research provided the impetus for another research project (see below), since it was the first time that evidence for palaeotsunamis was found in that region.
