Frangonissi

Architectural studies of the necropolis of Frangonissi (Greece)

Grant-aided by the Regula Pestalozzi Stiftung

Dr.-Ing. Clemens Brünenberg und Prof. Dr. phil. Franziska Lang

The cemetery of Frangonissi is located east of Olympia. In the course of excavations by the Greek Antiquities Service, a multi-phase cemetery was uncovered with over 20 tombs dating to between the 3rd century BCE and the 3rd century CE. To date, however, there has been no systematic and detailed documentation and investigation of the funerary architecture. As the largest and only necropolis of this kind in the environs of Olympia, its investigation with different methods (i.e. ground-based, laser-supported and drone-based recording, structure from motion methods) is of particular importance. The documentation of the building is being carried out in close cooperation with the responsible State Monuments Office under the direction of Dr. E. Kolia.
